A ‘Maddicott Room’ at Cohen Quadrangle

Exeter Historians of the last 40 years have been giving generously to the construction of Cohen Quadrangle in honour of their tutor, Dr John Maddicott.

Dr Maddicott was Fellow in History at the College from 1969 – 2006 and remains active in writing and research, publishing Founders and Fellowship: The Early History of Exeter College, Oxford to coincide with our 700th anniversary in 2014.

The donations will be used towards the construction of the “Maddicott Room” at Cohen Quadrangle, a modern, spacious teaching room that will be available for use by students and academics, for both formal and informal study.

The total given stands at just under £80,000 and we have high hopes of reaching our £100,000 target over the coming months.  If you would like to support the Maddicott Room through a gift of any size, please contact Tessa Stanley Price in the Development Office.

New photos of Cohen Quad

A quick visit to Walton Street this morning to take some photographs of the progress at Cohen Quad.

It’s looking fantastic – the basement and ground floor are finished and the first floor is being constructed at the moment.  Spirits are high on site and all is proceeding according to plan.

A Cohen Quad fact: 14,200 tons of earth were removed during the excavation and foundation-laying of the site.  That’s 710 lorry-loads!

Standing near the entrance on the ground floor, looking west down the length of the site.
The first floor is now going up.  The basement area can be seen below.
The 1913 facade still towers above everything else; not for long though, as the walls around it are going up fast.
Entrance to the site; the proposed completion date is currently right on schedule.

Spanish pods – the modern student en suite

A mock-up of Cohen Quad’s bathroom pods has been constructed at a production factory in southern Spain.

The College is about to approve the final design, enabling full production to begin. The pods will be fully assembled at the factory (including tiling, painting, fixtures and fittings) before they are delivered to Walton Street for installation during July and August.  Every student resident on the site will have an en suite bathroom of their own.

We hope that those Exonians who remember the days of traipsing across the Back Quad to reach the communal bathrooms in their old location at the bottom of Staircase 9 will be particularly impressed by the College’s ablutionary progress!
